Active shooter strategies, training


We’ve taken a look at how local colleges and governments have responded to active shooter reports across the country within the last year and have asked authorities what individuals should do if they find themselves in a situation with an active shooter.

Colleges in the Miami Valley region developed emergency protocols and put alert systems in place to deal with an active shooter on their campuses last year after a 20-year-old man opened fire at Umpqua Community College in rural Oregon killing at least 10 people and wounding seven before dying in a shootout with police.

A lieutenant with the Marietta, Ga. Police Department reported it typically takes law enforcement about three minutes to respond to an active shooter report. Here are a list of recommended survival strategies you can use until police arrive.

Last year, we reported on the increasing demand from local government agencies seeking training on how to respond to an active shooter in the workplace. The increase in this type of training came after a Dec. 2 attack on a county government facility in San Bernardino, Calif. that left 14 people dead and 21 wounded.
