5 area breweries: new, in the works, expanding

The changing seasons in the Dayton area has brought more than just cooler weather and crunchy leaves.

The brewery scene is currently going through changes of its own, including places that are coming soon or expanding.

Here are five things to know about the evolving brewery landscape:

New

The Wandering Griffin

The brewpub and coffee shop, Wandering Griffin, that moved into the former Quaker Steak & Lube space across from Wright State at 3725 Presidential Drive is gearing up to open soon.

They are currently hiring, recently posting to their Facebook inviting anyone interested to apply for server, bartender and kitchen staff positions online.

Wandering Griffin is 10,000-square-feet and will be able to seat about 300 inside and 120 on a patio.

The brewery plan to serve beer from other breweries, focusing on local breweries, while preparing to start brewing its own beers several months down the road.

In the works

Microbrewery in Middletown

The owners of Rolling Mill Brewery Co. will appear Wednesday before the Middletown Planning Commission for its application request to open a microbrewery and taproom just west of South Main Street in Middletown.

The founder Joshua Laubach needs approval to open in a warehouse at 916 First Ave. in the historical district, according to city documents.

Microbrewery outside of Mason

Kyle Hackbarth, doing business as Sonder Brewery, has submitted a plan for a microbrewery just outside of Mason and west of Interstate 71 in Warren County.

If approved by Warren County planning officials, Sonders would join two other microbreweries in Warren County: Cellar Dwellars in Salem Twp. and Crooked Handle in Springboro.

Expanding

Warped Wing

Co-founder Joe Waizmann said in October that Warped Wing Brewing Company is installing two large fermentation tanks that would allow the brewery to double its current production.

The two new 120-barrel fermentation tanks will be able to hold about 3,700 gallons.

Buckeye Road Trips

Buckeye Road Trips recently added two new visits to their stops in the month of October – Mother Stewart’s Brewing Company in Springfield and FigLeaf Brewing Co. in Middletown.

They also started offering two Saturday tours at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., according to Tammy Zell, Buckeye Road Trips founder and owner.

“For the past two years we have been doing tours starting at 1 p.m. on Saturdays. We have done well, but I realized that for us to grow, we were leaving people out by having the tour mid-day,” Zell said.
