‘Bad Art’ raises money for Champaign County arts programs

The Champaign County Arts Council is holding its sixth fundraiser to support community programs.

Bad Art by Good People takes local leaders from the community and they create a work of art, said Executive Director Heath Brackney.

None of them are professional artists, she said. Each local leader has the option to have a professional mentor and help them create the work of art, give them advice and tell them what supplies to use.

“They create the work of art of their choosing, of their medium,” Brackney said. “It’s all their design.”

Some of them turn out pretty good, she said.

“We are very proud of their work and the effort that they put in,” Brackney said.

Fifteen artists are participating this year and they come from local businesses and organizations like State Farm, West Liberty-Salem Local Schools, Mercy Health-Urbana and OSU Extension. They either were nominated by the arts council board or previous artists or some volunteer to complete a piece of art.

Voting on the best pieces will be open until that night. Each vote costs $1. The arts council will take cash, check, credit or a debit card.

“The fundraiser raises $10,000 to $15,000 a year, which all goes to arts programming and that does include school programs, nursing home programs, public events and concerts,” Brackney said.
