Cardinal Bernardin Community Service Award recipients announced

DAYTON - The St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church announced the recipients of this year’s Cardinal Bernardin Community Service Awards.

Those individuals and organizations are: Shondale Atkinson-Dorise, Mustard Seed Foundation; Dr. Morris Brown; Eduardo (Ed) Camacho, St. Mary’s; Cindy Currell, Catholic Social Services Miami Valley; Sharon Hairston, St. Benedict the Moor; Lu Dale, NAACP; Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity; Frank Kozarec, St. Augustine; Father Lawrence Minefield (Father Stretch), Incarnation; John Paddock, Christ Episcopal Church.

An awards ceremony and banquet will be held to honor the recipients from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday June 11 the Mandalay Banquet Center, 2700 E. River Rd., Moraine

United States Air Force Col. Bernard Fullenkamp, former president of the Board of Trustees for Catholic Social Services of Miami Valley, will be the keynote speaker.

The community service awards are named for Cardinal Joseph Louis Bernardin, who served as Archbishop of the Cincinnati Archdiocese, and as a Bishop and Cardinal of Chicago. Bernardin was a highly respected for his role in encouraging blacks to be more involved in the Catholic church. He also established the office of the Black Catholics and helped to diversify employment in the Catholic hospitals.

Tickets for the banquet are $50.
