Firefighters responded to the house in the 30 block just before 3 a.m. after a nearby resident called the fire in.

“I started smelling smoke and I heard somebody cussing and screaming,” the nearby resident said in a 911 call. “The flames are coming outside of the house.”

Crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure, which spread to a neighboring house that was also vacant, when they arrived on scene.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames from both houses without any reported injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The roof and walls of the initial burning house collapsed in the blaze, which led to the decision to demolish the structure.

Damage estimates of the neighboring home were not immediately available.

Dayton Power & Light personnel were called to the scene to cut power to both houses.
