Dayton teachers union endorses 5 in November school board race

The Dayton Education Association’s Legislative Committee has recommended five candidates on the November ballot for four seats on the Dayton School Board.

The board has endorsed Mohamed Al-Hamdani, Paul Bradley, William Harris jr, Jocelyn Rhynard and Karen Wick-Gagnet.

“This school board election is an extremely important issue on the November ballot,” DEA President David Romick said in a release sent Monday. “We need champions of public education who respect the roles of educators in every decision that impacts student learning conditions, and who will work tierlessly to provide opportunities to all, no matter where in the district they live.

The three other candidates on the ballot not endorsed by the union are current school board member Joe Lacey, Jo’el Jones and former board member Mario Gallin

Current board members Ron Lee, Hazel Rountree and Adil Baguirov decided not to run for re-election meaning there will be at least three new members after the election.

School Board forum set for Oct. 16

The eight candidates for the school board will take part in a forum sponsored by UpDayton, the YWCA and the Dayton Daily News on Oct. 16 at the new main branch of the Dayton Metro Library.

The event goes from 5:30-8 p.m. at 215 East Third Street in the library’s auditorium.
