December restaurant highlights: 2 new, 5 coming soon and 3 closing

December saw a number of announcements of new eateries coming to the area.

New

Boston Stoker

The new Boston Stoker coffee shop on South Main Street (Ohio 48) in Centerville has opened. The new shop also boasts two gaming rooms and custom-made cigar cases.

Plans call for closing an existing Boston Stoker coffee shop in the Washington Square Shopping Center on or about Dec. 31. There has been a Boston Stoker coffee shop in the Washington Square shopping center since 1981.

Ms. Pam’s Old Dayton Style Golden Fried Chicken

After a last-minute name change, the new Ms. Pam’s Old Dayton Style Golden Fried Chicken restaurant opened at 2920 Wayne Ave. near Belmont High School.

The Ms. Pam’s menu includes fried chicken pieces, chicken tenders, chicken livers and gizzards and boneless chicken. Sides include fried green tomatoes, fried broccoli-and-cheese bites, okra, cole slaw, green beans and macaroni & cheese. The restaurant offers a two-piece leg-and-thigh special on Tuesdays and Thursdays for $1.99.

Coming Soon

Flyboys Deli

The new Flyboys Deli in the works in Beavercreek is still navigating the maze of final inspections that are necessary to open and has pushed pack its opening date.

The restaurant’s owners are now targeting Jan. 5 for its grand opening — but that date is not set in stone, Flyboys Deli co-owner Steve Crandall said.

Wahlburgers restaurants

Wahlburgers restaurants — the burger chain co-owned by actor Mark Wahlberg and his brothers — are coming to some Meijer stores in Ohio, a Meijer official confirmed to this news outlet today.

A Wahlburgers release this week announced “new restaurant sites to be located on out lots near various Meijer stores” located in Michigan and Ohio. Wahlburgers also will bring its new food trucks to “select” Meijer locations, the burger chain’s officials said in a release.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit

The nation’s largest barbecue restaurant chain has its sights set on southwest Ohio, with plans to open as many as 10 more locations in the region.

The local franchise owners of Dickey’s Barbecue Pit , which opened its first Dayton-area location in Springboro just five weeks ago, are actively scouting out potential sites in areas such as Fairfield and Liberty Twp. with an eye toward growing the chain’s presence in a seven-county area in the southwest corner of the state.

Basil’s on Market

Basil’s on Market, which operates restaurants in Troy and downtown Dayton, is headed southward to a high-profile location, and has plans to add even more eateries.

“We are opening our third Basil’s on Market location in Mason,” Basil’s co-founder Jeff Finkelstein told this news outlet. “We have recently purchased the building that was formerly Brazenhead Irish Pub. We will be transforming this building into a Basil’s on Market.”

“The Sinful Orchard”

“The Sinful Orchard” — an independent restaurant that will focus strongly on local sourcing of its food — will open at The Greene Town Center.

The Sinful Orchard “is not a chain restaurant; it goes beyond the commonplace fare,” Shaine Sullivan, co-founder and general manager of the Sinful Orchard wrote on the restaurant’s web site. “Specialties will include smoked meats, appetizers, daily specials, happy hour deals, drinks and more. Prepare to be blown away by the vast array of hand-crafted beers, some of which are currently not offered in this area. Wine and alcoholic beverages will also be on display for your consumption.”

Closing

District 6 Donuts

District 6 Donuts, a custom donut shop at 6 Oakwood Ave. in Oakwood announced its closure in a Facebook post. The business opened June 1.

The business was founded by retired Dayton police officer Bill Parsons and his sister, Kellie Tomlinson.  Customers could choose their own toppings and drizzles.

The Tipp o’ the Town Family Restaurant

The Tipp o’ the Town Family Restaurant has been a community mainstay for more than 29 years at 1150 W. Main St. at I-75. But its owner, Paul Loubier, is retiring, and the restaurant is scheduled to close its doors at 3 p.m. on Dec. 31.

But there’s a chance the restaurant could reopen under the same name and new ownership sometime early next year.

Papa Murphy’s Take & Bake Pizza

Papa Murphy’s Take & Bake Pizza at 1195 N. Fairfield Road north of U.S. 35 has closed.

Here’s the text of the note taped to the entrance: “STORE CLOSED — Corporate closed this store because we wouldn’t spend $140,000 for new floors, POS (point of sale) system, new ceiling, and new make line. This would have been money WASTED!!”
