During the rescue attempt, a firefighter suffered minor burns as they carried the victim down the stairs.
Medics attempted to revive the victim, identified as Wilmer D. Martin, 61, but were unsuccessful.
The deputy was treated and released at the scene. The firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor burns, where they were expected to be treated and released.
The apartment only had one way in and one way out which made it difficult for fire crews, and the apartment was in a remote, non-hydrant area, King said. Fire crews were able to use a unsecured line off of another fire engine.
There wasn't any evidence of working smoke detectors inside the structure, according to the state fire marshal's office. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Mutual aid was provided by multiple departments including Miami County's Bethel Twp., Pike Twp., Enon and Springfield Twp.
"It is a tragic event, not only for the community, but for the family involved and the heroic events that occurred leading up this. The sheriff deputy being unprotected from smoke and fire making entry. Firefighters making entry without a secured water source," said King.
