Exercise, wild animals, closing hospital focus of 3 weekend events


Three events this weekend allow people to exercise for a good cause, weigh in on the closure of a local hospital and take in a controversial wild animal circus that has a long history in Dayton.

3 things to do this weekend

1. The Gixo fitness app and the Go Red for Women organization are teaming up to provide a run/walk event to raise funds and awareness of heart disease in women. Gixo will donate $10 for every mile that each participant completes and proceeds benefit the American Heart Association. The event is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at Kyle Park, 500 S. 2. The Dayton Unit NAACP is hosting a community forum on the impending closure of Good Samaritan Hospital. The event is aimed at having an open dialogue between Premier Health Network executives and community members. The forum is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Zion Baptist Church, 1684 Earlham Drive, Dayton. More information can be found at the Dayton Unit NAACP website.

3. The Antioch Shrine Circus has teamed up this year with the Tarzan Zerbini Circus to continue its long tradition of bringing wild animal circuses to the city of Dayton. The event is set for Saturday and Sunday with the opening ceremony happening at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the University of Dayton Arena, 1801 Edwin C. Moses Blvd. Tickets and more information are available here. A protest of the event has been organized by CompassionWorks International and protesters are being called to gather at the arena at 2 p.m. Saturday.
