5 fires, including 2 deadly ones, spotlight late-night, early-morning blazes

The Sunday night Sugarcreek Twp. barn fire believed to be caused by stored racing fuel is the latest of several blazes – some of them deadly - either destroying or severely damaging area structures.

The blaze that crews were dispatched to just after 10 p.m. on Sears Road caused multiple explosions, but no injuries were reported.

Many of the area fires since Nov. 25 were reported in the late night or early morning hours. They include these five:

-Dec. 13 Miamisburg house fire: A family of six escaped a house fire that destroyed the home and its contents and damaged vehicles in the 1100 block of East Pearl Street. Becky McGeorge was critically injured in the fire, which started before 7 a.m. and caused unusually intense heat, firefighters said.

-Dec. 13 Lebanon church fire: The Bethel AME Church was planning to have a holiday Christmas program before a fire heavily damaged the church in the early morning hours. Crews responded to the scene in the 100 block of North Cherry Street around 3:30 a.m. Officials believe the blaze was caused by an electrical issue.

-Dec. 5 Kettering house explosion: A 58-year-old Kettering woman was killed after an explosion and fire rocked her home in the 400 block of North Claridge Drive shortly after 4:30 a.m. Darlene Baumgardner died in the explosion that threw her from the home into a neighboring yard.

-Dec. 5 Trotwood house fire: An 83-year-old Trotwood woman died after a fire broke out in the 4000 block of Glencross around 7 a.m. Mary Frances McCaslin died in the blaze.

-Nov. 25 Dayton house fire: Two homes were damaged in a fire that spread to three yards in the 1400 block of McLain Street around 5:45 a.m. Nobody was reported injured in the blaze, which was detected by a neighbor.
