Kettering HS student shooting: 3 things to know

A dispute between teenagers this past Sunday night ended with one 16-year-old male getting shot.

Ronnie Bowers, the victim, was shot in the back of the head after an incident that flared up at AlterFest, according to police.

A gofundme account has been created.

Bowers is currently on life support, awaiting multiple surgeries and will likely “sustain severe, permanent brain damage, and possibly blindness” if he makes it through, according to the account.

As new information becomes available, here is what you need to know:

1.) A deeper look

The shooting was part of an ongoing dispute that involved groups of people and continued at AlterFest.

One group left the event in an attempt to avoid conflict and the second group followed, blocking a sedan driven by the victim, according to police.

“The victim had nothing to do with this dispute, prior to this or during last night,” Kettering Police Chief Christopher Protsman told reporters at the news conference. “He was an innocent bystander.”

Shots were fired when Bowers tried to drive away, one hitting him in the back of the head.

2.) 4 males detained

Four male suspects, all who attends or attended Kettering City Schools, have been detained – 18, two 16-year-olds, and a 14-year-old.

Miles Heizer, 18, was arrested Monday, and jail records show the offense as felonious assault.

Heizer could appear in court as early as Wednesday.

The three juveniles appeared in Montgomery County Juvenile Court on Tuesday.

Police have not said who fired the gun that injured Bowers, or whether they have the gun.

3.) What the school is doing

Kettering Fairmont High School brought in additional counselors Tuesday to help students who may need some support following the incident.

“One of the best things we do is talk to kids. Particularly after a tragedy, they’re more apt to talk and reach out. The biggest thing we’re focusing on is making sure the kids are safe; making sure they know what they can do to help us to help keep them safe,” said Dan Von Handorf, director of student services for Kettering City Schools.

Von Handorf also said that the district increased the amount of police presence in the high school.
