Late night severe threat for Miami Valley

Severe thunderstorms developed Tuesday evening from Illinois down to Arkansas. Tornado watches were issued ahead of a strong storm system which was advancing from the Central Plains into the Great Lakes late in the afternoon.

Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist Eric Elwell says the threat for severe storms will arrive in the Miami Valley as soon as midnight Wednesday morning with two rounds of storms possible.

The first round could sweep across the area from midnight to 3am. A second round of storms is expected to arrive after 5am from the northwest and sweep southeast across the Miami Valley through the Wednesday morning commute.

"It is pretty rare for us to see a threat for severe storms last late into the night," Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist Eric Elwell said, "but we have plenty of ingredients in place including a lot of moisture flowing into the Miami Valley which will stick around through Wednesday morning."

Damaging wind, large hail and very heavy rain are the primary concerns from any severe weather overnight. However, an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

"The greater tornado threat will likely stay just to our west, but can rule out something making it all the way to the I-75 corridor." Elwell said. The greatest tornado potential, although overall somewhat low, is expected with the first wave of storms that highs between midnight and 3am.
