Library presents events just for teens

As a mother of two teenagers, I have a front row seat to the trials and joys that accompany this particular stage of life. Teens are struggling to grow into their adult selves, maturing both physically and emotionally. It’s tough work. Washington-Centerville Public Library can be a powerful ally in this process.

Mastering social skills. It might surprise some that the Library is a great place to learn how to get along well with others. Beginning with story time, children are learning how to socialize with other children their age. Teens get the same social opportunities at events like Totally Teen Tuesday. It's a great way to learn to step outside your comfort zone and meet new people. Teen events happen each month. Go online to www.wclibrary.info for exact dates and times.

Developing leadership skills. Our Teen Advisory Board provides not only an outlet for taking a leadership role in projects, but also fosters a service orientated spirit in local teens. The Teen Advisory Board helps develop Library programs and services specifically for teens. Applications for this teen volunteer group can be found at www.wclibrary.info.

Becoming more knowledgeable. Research clearly shows that teens who read are more likely to perform well in school, graduate from college, and get a higher paying job. No other activity builds the vocabulary and comprehension skills needed to do well on college admissions tests as well as reading. The Library's teen collection is robust and teen librarians are on standby to recommend great books to your teenager. Teens can even win great prizes, just for reading this summer as part of the Teen Summer Reading Club.

The Library is a safe place for teens to connect, learn and grow into tomorrow’s leaders. Encourage your teen to drop by the Library this summer.
