$1 million Powerball winner in Centerville

A $1 million winning Powerball ticket was sold in Centerville, according to the Ohio Lottery.

The winning ticket was sold at the Speedway, 360 Miamisburg-Centerville Road, and is one of three $1 million winners in the state. The other two were sold in Cleveland and Toledo, according to Marie Kilbane, spokeswoman for the Ohio Lottery.

Kilbane said the Speedway will get a $1,000 bonus.

“It was a big night for Powerball, and Ohio shared in it as well,” Kilbane said. “It’s great for them. It will bring some business and some attention to these winners.”

Kilbane said the winner has 180 days from the draw date to claim the prize. The $1 million winner can visit the lottery’s Dayton office to claim the prize, Kilbane said.

Any cash prize up to $599 from last night’s drawing can be redeemed at the retail store starting today. For more information, visit www.OhioLottery.com or call 800-686-4208.

Kilbane said sales on Wednesday doubled what they were on Tuesday.

“When you see a jackpot like this ($1.5 billion), the day of the drawing around lunch time or drive time, you see some very high numbers,” Kilbane said. “We saw numbers in the millions (of dollars in tickets sold) for a number of hours the last couple days.”

The state’s three $1 million winners had the first five numbers of the Powerball correct, but not the Powerball number.

Tyrone Phillippi, president of Miami Twp.-based LifePlan Financial Group, said he recommends to the winner to take a pause — a “decision-free zone,” he said — before making any financial decisions. Talking with a certified financial transitionist, estate planning attorney and an accountant would be wise, he said.

Phillippi said 70 percent of those who don’t plan end up in worse situations than they were in before they received the money within a three- to five-year time span.

“Doing proper planning does have its benefits,” Phillippi said. “It’s easy to get excited when these kinds of monies come in. You start to give money away and it’s hard to get that money back. Take a pause. Think about what you want to do. Understanding what’s most important to you is the most critical thing to do.”

According to the Ohio Lottery, recent large claims in the greater Dayton area in 2015 were:

  • Feb. 11 — Bowling Entertainment Group: sold $1 million Powerball jackpot to 19 Orbis employees.
  • Feb. 25 — Rod Dees Party Supply, Miamisburg: sold a $3.5 million Classic Lotto jackpot prize to Larry Curtis, Kettering, and Walter Lakes, Germantown.
  • May 23 — Vandalia Carryout, Vandalia: sold a $1 million Powerball prize to area pool of 32.
