Muggy, hot weather to continue into weekend

Friday’s storms left thousands powerless.

This weekend will bring more hot and muggy weather, according to Storm Center 7 Meteorologist McCall Vrydaghs.

Saturday will be hot and humid with highs around 90 degrees, although it will feel more like the mid-90s, Vrydaghs said. The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Butler and Warren counties from 1 to 7 p.m. on Saturday.

There will be a slight chance of storms during the day, with storms likely to move into the area by the evening. Some storms may become severe, with damaging winds, hail and heavy rain being the main threats.

Sunday will be muggy and warm as well, with highs in the upper-80s. Showers may linger on Sunday morning, but the majority of the day will likely be clear.

This weekend’s humidity follows a stint of severe wind and thunderstorms that caused nearly 11,000 people to lose power in the Miami Valley on Friday morning.

Strong winds knocked down trees, blocking roads in Beavercreek. A DP&L pole caught on fire in Piqua, a tree fell on a house in Arcanum, and trees and wires were strewn across roadways in Darke County.

By 5 p.m. on Friday, less than a thousand DP&L customers were still without power, however, according to an online outage map.

Most of Friday’s storms peaked between 7 and 8:30 a.m., leaving the rest of the day hot and muggy across the region.

Friday’s power disruptions come 10 days after what DP&L labeled was “the most destructive storm in five years” for outages.

Damaging wind and thunderstorms caused 62,000 DP&L customers to lose power last Tuesday, with some not regaining electricity until more than two days later.

Hundreds of DP&L workers were spread throughout western Ohio, lifting trees off of power lines and restoring power. DP&L had to call in assistance from four surrounding states to aid in the effort.
