National NAACP leader highlights Springfield fundraising event

A national leader will headline an annual fundraiser for the Springfield unit of the NAACP.

The NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet will start at 5 p.m. Friday with a social hour, and the program will kick off at 6 p.m. at the Hollenbeck Bayley Conference Center.

The event will feature NAACP National Chairman Leon Russell, who will talk about the national causes the organization is fighting for and the importance of the local unit.

“We are so excited to have a national NAACP representative come to Springfield,” said Denise Williams, NAACP Springfield unit president. “This is a huge event and an honor to host that. We need to hear why it is important to be a part of the largest civil rights organization in the country.”

Tickets are still available for the event and can be purchased at the door. The cost of a ticket is $55.

The event is important to the local unit as it is one of its largest fundraisers of the year. The money from the event goes to paying for office space and other essential items to keep the unit open.

“Without this, we wouldn’t be able to survive,” Williams said.

Not many tickets have been sold, she said, and that is concerning.

“It’s been slow,” Williams said. “It’s been very slow, and I’m a little worried.”

However, she said last year tickets started to sell slowly and then many people bought tickets towards the end, so the event ended up being a full house.

The event will also feature catering from Rudy’s Smokehouse and live music.

She said the NAACP is important to residents in Clark County, and she hopes many people will attend the banquet.

“We have a lot of work to do,” she said. “We have come a long way yet we still have a lot of work that we need to do.”
