Retail, restaurants lead business activity downtown

Retail and restaurants last year accounted for the largest share of site-selection activities and business openings in Dayton’s Central Business District, suggesting strong interest in new and unique shopping and dining experiences.

In 2016, 54 percent of businesses that opened in the downtown district were restaurants and retail, compared to just 23 percent in 2013, according to data from the Downtown Dayton Partnership.

Similarly, 36 percent of people or businesses that looked at or searched for sites downtown last year were in the restaurant and retail sectors, the partnership said.

Those sectors accounted for just 22 percent of searches three years earlier.

Downtown’s supply of places to eat and shop has grown considerably in recent years, and some notable additions from 2016 include Table 33 on West Second Street, Crafted & Cured on Wayne Avenue and Basil’s on Market at Monument Avenue and Patterson Boulevard.
