Woman taken by CareFlight in 7-vehicle I-70 crash

Six people were hurt when multiple vehicles got tangled up in a wreck that temporarily shut down westbound Interstate 70 near Enon Friday night.

The crash involved five passenger vehicles and two semitrailers, according a release from the Ohio Highway Patrol.

A woman was taken by medical helicopter with serious injuries and five others, including a small child, were taken by life squads to hospitals for treatment of injuries not considered life threatening, according to the release.

Crews responded to the crash at 5:28 p.m. and the highway was completely shut down for one hour before being restricted to one lane, according to the release.

All lanes reopened at approximately 10 p.m., according to OHP.

Fire crews, including the Mad River Fire Department, worked to extricate people from wrecked vehicles and care for the injured.

"We spent probably about 20 minutes extricating victims from two vehicles," Chief Tracy Young said at the scene.

The investigating OHP trooper said the crash started when a red minivan struck a disabled vehicle that had pulled over on the side of the highway.

The van then "pinballed" back into traffic, causing the other vehicles to wreck, the trooper said.

"I was like three cars behind it and just saw brake lights and a cloud of dust really fast," said John Bray, of Kettering. He was travelling westbound and described the scene as "crazy."

Kyle Cowgill was driving home from Akron when he came upon the wreckage and helped one of the victims. "I contacted his wife to let her know he was OK," he said.

Other responding agencies included the Clark County Sheriff's Office, Enon police, Springfield Twp. Fire & EMS and Bethel Twp. Fire & EMS.

"All the departments out here did a superb job working together," Young said.
