Miamisburg votes to ban medical marijuana, joins others in Dayton area

Miamisburg has approved a ban on medical marijuana.

The city council voted Tuesday night to join other area communities like Oakwood, Huber Heights and Butler Twp. in rejecting the issue.

The state last year legalized the drug for medical use. However, Miamisburg’s legislation to “prohibit cultivators, processors or retail dispensaries” of medical marijuana indicates it “remains classified as a Schedule I controlled substance” under federal guidelines.

Beginning more than a year ago – before medical marijuana became legal in Ohio - the city approved two moratoriums against it, the second of which expires next month, records show.

Moraine is considering a ban similar to the one approved by Miamisburg.

Some communities – Riverside, German Twp., Dayton, Yellow Springs, Mad River Twp., Monroe and Carlisle, among them - have allowed proposals for cultivation sites to move forward.
