Monroe council fills vacant seat with community-involved realtor

A local realtor has been appointed to Monroe City Council.

Christina McElfresh was appointed to Monroe City Council during a special meeting on Saturday. She was selected from a field of 11 applicants seeking the seat vacated last month by former vice mayor Suzi Rubin.

McElfresh will complete the final two years of Rubin’s term.

“I am honored to represent my fellow residents in this capacity,” McElfresh said in an email. “I look forward to working with the dedicated and talented citizens who comprise Monroe City Council and city staff.”

A local realtor with Sibcy Cline Realtors, McElfresh attended Wright State University and the University of Cincinnati. McElfresh has lived in the city for the past 19 years, is active in the Monroe community and is president of the Monroe Historical Society and the Monroe Rotary Club.

In her application letter, McElfresh said she believes it is important to take an active role as a resident and give back to the community.

“I bring my current and previous experience on local, state, and national levels with respect to strong communication skills, conflict management, contract negotiations, and leadership experience to the table,” McElfresh said. “I am ready to fully commit and dedicate my time, energy, and effort toward ensuring Monroe’s continued strategic growth.”

Monroe council met twice last week to interview the 11 applicants and opted to make their selection on Saturday afternoon following the final round of interviews.

Council had to make the appointment within 30 days, as required by the city charter, to replace Rubin, who resigned Dec. 31. She and her husband are planning to move out of state after he retires.

Rubin was appointed as a council member since 2004, won full four-year terms in 2007, 2011 and 2015 and served as the city’s vice mayor. Over the years, Rubin has served on a number of local and regional boards and commissions and has served as president of the Warren County Municipal League and the Monroe Area Community Investment Corporation.

She was part of the effort to create the Monroe Local School District in 1999 and served as one of its founding board members and board president. Previously, Monroe was part of the Middletown school district.
