Moraine replaces retiring fire chief

The city’s longtime fire deputy has been named its new fire chief, taking over for a 32-year city veteran who led the department for nearly a decade.

David Cooper has assumed the top job in the Moraine Fire Division, replacing the retired Anthony Trick.

Cooper, 54, has been a firefighter for nearly 34 years, the past 29 with Moraine. He was promoted from lieutenant in 2000 to deputy chief, a position he has held since.

He was named Moraine’s firefighter of the year in 2011 and city employee of the year in 2012.

“We were fortunate,” said Moraine City Manager David Hicks, to have Cooper “ready to move up as fire chief. So that made it great for the city to have another quality person in that role.

“So the transition won’t be remarkable by any significant way as far as changing philosophy or service to the community. It was good for the city and good for both of those two men,” he said.

Trick served nearly his entire career as a firefighter in Moraine, being promoted to lieutenant in 1996, deputy chief in 2000 and chief in 2007, when Steve Kirby retired.

Along with his city leadership, Trick has for decades been a “really strong part of the community,” attending virtually every event, Hicks said.

Trick “rose through the ranks to do an excellent job with the city,” Hicks said. “And while I was sad to see him go professionally, personally it’s great for Tony. He’s at the time of his life when he’s ready to retire and I think it’s good for him and his family.”

Cooper’s pay rate in his new job will be $48.11 per hour, according to the city.

“It’s a great department to work for. I’ve got great people to work for,” Cooper said.

“The city is doing well right now. It looks like the future is going to be good,” he said. “So I’m just looking forward to growing with the department and making sure we keep the same level of service — if not improve it.”
