Must Reads 2016: Restaurant closings throughout the Miami Valley in 2016

The Dayton Daily News is highlighting the best work of 2016 with the year-ending Must Reads campaign. Here, notable restaurant closings this year.

Barnsider

The Barnsider, which opened in February 1975 at 5202 N. Main St. in Harrison Twp., closed after dinner service Saturday night, May 14. The restaurant had been a popular gathering spot and destination for prom dinners, rehearsal dinners, family gatherings and special events for decades, serving families and communities in north Dayton and in northern Montgomery County.

Designer Dogs

Designer Dogs was an independent restaurant inside the Mall at Fairfield Commons. The restaurant sold all-beef hot dogs that founder Mark Feinstein made himself by grinding beef with spices and seasonings. The dogs were then hand-rolled and deep-fried in canola oil.

Krispy Kreme

On Jan. 31, Krispy Kreme permanently closed its only Dayton-area location. The donut shop was located on 2001 E. Dorothy Lane where now a Rapid Fired Pizza is planning to open soon.

LaRosa’s

In late October, LaRosa’s shut down its Huber Heights restaurant due to a lack of business. The company-owned store at 7375 Old Troy Pike shut down after the close of business on Oct. 30 after experiencing “consistently low sales,” LaRosa’s officials said in a release.

Logan’s Roadhouse

On Sept. 27, Logan’s Roadhouse shut down its Beavercreek location at 2819 Centre Dr. near the Mall at Fairfield Commons, according to an employee who attended a mandatory all-employee meeting at the restaurant. Employees were told high rent and the upcoming renegotiation of a lease was a factor in the decision to close the Beavercreek location.

Qdoba

After nearly two years, Qdoba on Brown Street closed its doors on July 7. The franchise operator for the Brown Street location told this news outlet the restaurant will not reopen in its current space.

Shish Wraps

Shish Wraps at 1200 Brown St. closed its doors after three years.

“It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing the closing of Shish Wraps, effective April 26,” the restaurant’s owners wrote on the Shish Wraps Facebook page. “We want to thank all our fans and loyal customers who have supported us for the past three years.”

Sushi Café

The Sushi Cafe at 108 Byers Rd. in Miamisburg shut down after the close of business Sept. 12, and its owners were removing personal belongings the very next day. The sushi restaurant was in business for more than 17 years but was the victim of declining sales, a rash of break-ins and a legal dispute with a former owner.

Yoba Frozen Yogurt

Once located across from Von Maur at The Greene shopping center, Yoba Frozen Yogurt closed its doors in late March. Yoba was open for five years and specialized in tart frozen yogurt and Bubble Tea.
