A spokesman for the retailer said the decision was made because of the "creepy clown" scare that has been gripped the nation.

"Given the current environment, we have made the decision to remove a variety of clown masks from our assortment, both in stores and online," spokesman Joshua Thomas told WCCO.

A representative for Target told ABC News that the retailer started pulling masks off store shelves last week.

"We also have edited down our assortment online," the representative said. "You'll still find clown masks there, but we made the decision to pull back on the number."

People in several states have reported threats and pranks committed by people wearing clown masks.
