Newcomers Centers, Jennings win Franklin Twp. trustee seats

Newcomers Shane Centers and Matt Jennings have been elected as Franklin Twp. trustees in their first run for office.

According to unofficial final results from the Warren County Board of Elections, Centers was the leading vote-getter receiving 31.4 percent of the vote. Jennings was the second-highest vote-getter receiving nearly 26.6 percent of the vote. Other newcomers included Tony Workman receiving nearly 25. 3 percent of the vote; Nicholas Lamb receiving nearly 14.8 percent of the vote; and write-in candidate Jason Heys with nearly 1.9 percent of the vote.

Centers said all of the candidates got along during the campaign adding that he loved the civility demonstrated by the candidates.

He said he did a lot of door-knocking and worked to get his name out.

“I really listened to people about what was needed in the township,” he said.

Centers said he got a lot of compliments about the township and also learned that some were upset about the fire levy on the ballot.

“Some of them wanted it, some of them didn’t,” he said.

He also said that many residents in the unincorporated part of the township do not want to be annexed by a city.

As for a future fire levy, Centers said he wants to do an autopsy on the levy and why it failed.

After he takes office, Centers wants to get a lay of the land and learn what the township’s budget is as well as its expenditures and try to build some synergies.

Centers’ father Denny, Franklin’s mayor, was re-elected to a new four-year term Tuesday.

Jennings said late Tuesday night, “I’m quite humbled and I’m trying to soak it in right now. “I’m excited to take the seat and I’m taking it with open arms.”

He declined to comment about any future fire levies, but said he wants to concentrate on the township’s infrastructure, roads, buildings, fire equipment, cemetery and the fire department.
