A near-record 107 bicyclists circled the Area A flight line in the third of seven monthly Air Force Blue Streak Time Trials during the evening of June 12.
Second Lt. Nathan Robinson finished the Blue Streak route in 22:15 for first with a 27.51 mile per hour average. Robinson is a test engineer at the Aeromedical Test Laboratory in the Human Systems Division, and has been racing for seven years. He edged Peter Wimberg, a Cincinnati cycling coach and the most prolific Blue Streak winner ever, by just 4 seconds.
Robinson’s average speed was a remarkable 3.5 miles per hour faster than his May 8 average speed of 23.98 miles per hour. He discussed his time afterward saying, “I’m happy it was enough to win, but I’m still recovering from a few surgeries on my leg from an infection this spring and am still not outputting my best wattage from last year. I am hoping to set a course record by the last one in October.”
The Blue Streak heat did not bother him.
He said, “It wasn’t too bad. I’m used to racing in the muggy southern summers, so I was well prepared with fluids,” Robinson said.
Capt. Tiffany Brakefield finished third among Blue Streak women, averaging 21.97 mph. She is a clinical psychology resident in the Mental Health flight. In addition to Blue Streak, she competes as a member of the Wright-Patterson Varsity Triathlon Team.
According to Brakefield, “It was very windy on Wednesday, and I was just hoping it wouldn’t hail on me. I attacked the wind as I would a giant hill, shifting into a low gear and increasing my cadence. The heat wasn’t really a factor for me. I was happy with my place but disappointed with my overall time which was 30-plus seconds slower than the previous Blue Streak.”
All are welcome to join in the next Blue Streak Time Trial on July 10. Blue Streak Time Trials take place the second Wednesday of the month through September, and the first Wednesday of October. Plan to arrive at the Tennis Club parking lot in Area A by 5 p.m. and register by 5:30 p.m. Helmets are required.
Those without base identification should email their driver’s license numbers to firstname.lastname@example.org at least a week before Blue Streak to be added to the gate entry list for that date.
