A Sidney woman is hopeful her brother will safely return from Oman after traveling there to discuss a marital issue with his wife that may have involved an emailed threat.
Misty Lawrence said her younger brother, William Holcomb, 42, left Sept. 4 for the Arab state of Oman, where his wife is stationed with the U.S. military. An attorney in Oman with the law firm of Duane Morris, which has offices in the U.S. and abroad, told NewsCenter 7’s Yuna Lee that Holcomb was arrested and detained because of a threat, but that Holcomb was not charged.
The attorney further wrote that his firm was working with the United States Embassy in Muscat, Oman to get a letter requesting Holcomb’s release and immediate return to the U.S.
“I’m devastated,” Lawrence said during a WHIO-TV television interview. “We need him home. His (teenage) boys need him. My mom needs him. It’s painful to see your brother going through something like this.”
Lawrence said she’s contacted the offices of U.S. Rep Jim Jordan, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and other officials who could intervene. Jordan’s office said it could not comment due to privacy concerns. Officials at the U.S. Embassy in Oman could not be reached for comment.
A Sept. 10 email from attorney Jeff Rodwell to Holcomb’s wife, Kim, said: “The public prosecutor has agreed to release your husband if he receives a letter from the U.S. Embassy requesting the same. Yesterday I requested the embassy send such a letter. They are considering that request both here in Oman and in Washington. As soon as we receive that letter, we will liaise with the public prosecutor for the immediate release of your husband.”
The email further states that the embassy has concerns about the outright release of Holcomb and that an immediate return to the U.S. may be required. Rodwell wrote that the worst-case scenario is that he would face a hearing in which the attorneys would fight for his release because he committed no offense in Oman.
“My heart’s crushed,” Lawrence said. “Me and Billy have been close, very close. He’s been my protector and it just kills me to know he’s not home yet… . I just want him home.”
