Then & Now: When a carnival drew crowds to Second Street

An early carnival drew crowds to Dayton’s Second Street in the late 1800s.

This photograph, believed to have been taken in 1895, shows the street filled with pedestrians passing by tents and stalls set up in the street.

This view of Second Street is the subject of this week's update to the popular Then & Now photo feature, which explores past and present views of notable Dayton locations.

The women in the early photograph are dressed in long skirts and carry parasols. Many of the men wear suit jackets and all have some variation of hat on top of their heads.

A livery boarding and feed stable, May & Company, a furniture and carpet store and Heathman’s Cracker Bakery make up the notable businesses on the north side of the street.
