More memories of John Glenn

We’ve heard from a lot of readers who have memories of the late, great John Glenn. This is from Robert and Pat O’Connor.

“July 4, 2003: I was executive director of the Centerville/Washington Township Annual 4th of July Festival. The festival president and I had a commitment from John and Annie Glenn to serve as grand marshalls of the festival. When at the last minute John had to attend a function at WPAFB, his scheduler informed us he would not make our reception on the evening of July 3.

“While initially we were disappointed, he did appear on July 4 and each of the Americana staff had the opportunity to spend a few minutes with John and his wife. We were introduced in a private meeting room. Wow! What a thrill. My observation was, here was a very common man who achieved one of the most mind-boggling achievements in our history — first man in orbit — but it was like meeting an old friend as he asked about the festival and our families. Glenn was a very humble man. We will cherish this wonderful experience for our lifetime.”

Everything we hear about Glenn just makes us miss him more. Drop me a line at rrollins@coxohio.com.
