Skywatching for Santa

Ah, it really must be December: We’re getting ready to look to the skies for Santa.

One of our sister papers, the Palm Beach Post in Florida, reports that NORAD is once again officially on the case: “The North American Aerospace Defense Command powered up the radar Thursday in anticipation of the annual one-night, round-the-world-flight of a certain resident of the North Pole.

“For more than 60 years,” the Post writes, “NORAD has turned all of its tracking capabilities toward following the progress of Santa Claus and his reindeer as he takes flight on Christmas Eve. For the hardcore Santa follower, NORAD’s website does not disappoint. In the run-up to the big day, visitors can head to the website to watch a movie, play some games, hear some music and learn about St. Nicholas, his elves and his sleigh. NORAD also has a presence at the North Pole (check out the Secret Santa Files).”

You can find it all at www.noradsanta.org. Google’s got its own Santa tracker, too. Silly, sure — but why not? ‘Tis the season, and we could use it.

Opinion: A solution when a nation’s schools fail

BUCHANAN, Liberia — Imagine an elementary school where students show up, but teachers don’t. Where 100 students squeeze into a classroom but don’t get any books. Recently, Gallup published the results of its annual Values and Beliefs poll. The headline is: “Americans Hold Record Liberal Views on Most Moral Issues.” Gallup has been doing this poll since 2001, and the change in public opinion on the moral issues surveyed has been in one direction — more liberal. Of 19 issues surveyed in this...
TODAY’S MODERATOR: We’re having fewer kids

Looks like we’re heading toward a future of fewer kids. Our staff writer Lynn Hulsey wrote recently about a new population trend in the United States. She writes: “Last year the nation’s birthrate hit a record low, falling to 62 births per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Last year...
COMMENTARY: What’s really stalling health care?

You might asking yourself why the Republican-controlled Senate is having such a hard time even bringing Trumpcare to a vote. Mitch McConnell postponed the vote once already and he may have to do it again. One reason is that Sen. John McCain had some pretty serious surgery and may by on the DL for a while. At least his craniotomy was fully covered by...
Opinion: 12 things to believe if ‘witch hunt’ accusation is true

One column cannot accommodate the list of things you must believe if you trust that Donald Trump is truly the victim of a baseless witch hunt. Consider this a mere stab. 1) Donald Trump Jr., Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner did nothing wrong by meeting with a Kremlin-connected Russian offering dirt on Hillary Clinton. The emails requesting the meeting...
