$30K in changes added to Butler County monument project

As restorers get further along on repairs to the Soldiers Sailors and Pioneers monument in Hamilton, some more changes have been made to the project, adding almost $30,000 to the price.

Commissioners awarded NR Lee Restoration a $360,900 contract last year for restoration of the monument that houses historic artifacts and war records.

The changes bring the price up to $425,870, still below preliminary estimates that topped $1 million and under the budget of $500,000.

Further repairs were needed to the limestone at the entrance on the east side of the monument, according to Community Development Manager Desmond Maaytah.

Some items originally in the contract have also been delayed because they weren’t considered urgent, he said.

The specific items changed in the contract are:

  • Replace all additional broken limestone at lower level of east side monument. Only damaged areas of limestone will be cut out and new limestone installed. Additional $7,800
  • Omit window repairs. Decrease of $21,070
  • Omit statue refinishing. Decrease of $17,500
  • Repairs to copper dome roof in favor of replacement. Decrease of $12,760
  • Remove and replace copper dome roof. Additional $72,000

The total changes represent an additional cost of $28,470

Maaytah said he does not expect to see any more changes to the contract on the monument project and work is expected to be complete by May 1.
