Flyers unveil new uniforms at media day

The Dayton Flyers on Tuesday unveiled new uniforms as part of their media day at UD Arena.

Dayton last changed its uniforms — and logo — in 2014 on the heels of its Elite Eight appearance.

The new jerseys fit tighter and are sleeker, something the players seemed to like.

“I really like the uniforms,” senior Scoochie Smith said. “I really like the tight fit. It feels like nothing is really on your body. You don’t have to worry about your jersey flopping around.”

The Flyers wore the white home uniforms on Tuesday. There are also red and blue uniforms for road and neutral-site games and a gray version as well.

“Sometimes as a player you feel a little off with something that’s too baggy or when the top of your jersey is leaning off your shoulder,” senior Charles Cooke said. “Something that feels real knit and tight is really good.”

The Flyers, who were picked Tuesday to win the Atlantic 10 Conference in a vote of coaches and media, are seeking their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

Cunningham the captain: Redshirt sophomore Josh Cunningham has yet to play a minute for the Flyers, but he’s made quite an impression. Cunningham was recently voted as one of the team’s three captains, along with seniors Smith and Kyle Davis.

The 6-foot-7 Cunningham transferred to UD from Bradley and sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules.

“I was very surprised, especially since I haven’t played a game yet,” Cunningham said. “They felt that I’ve done something right to be a captain. I try to do the right things on and off the court and be a great teammate to my brothers.”

Cunningham averaged 7.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as a freshman at Bradley. He played with Davis at Morgan Park High School in Chicago.

When asked about Cunnningham, just about every one of his teammates said he will energize the Flyers when he’s on the court.

“Josh is something special,” Davis said. “Josh gives you all aspects of the game and hustles and plays hard.”

Red & Blue Scrimmage: The men’s and women’s basketball teams will participate in the annual intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday at UD Arena.

The women’s scrimmage is set for 2 p.m., followed by the men at 3.

After the men’s scrimmage, both teams will be available for autographs for approximiately 45 minutes.

Admission and parking are free. Doors open at 1 p.m.
