It’s not often that rivals Piqua and Troy exchange transfers. But that’s what happened at Monday night’s Troy City Schools Board of Education meeting.
Dave Palmer, Piqua’s athletic director the last eight years, was approved as Troy’s new athletic director. He succeeds Jeff Sakal, who reportedly will retire from the Troy school district in December.
Palmer, contacted Monday, confirmed the move after it had been approved. His resignation at Piqua is effective immediately.
Palmer spent 26 years at Piqua, mostly as the head athletic trainer.
Piqua treasurer Jeff Price also was approved for the same position at Troy.
- John Thomas is pulling double duty as the AD at Talawanda and Edgewood. He recently accepted the Talawanda position and also will remain as Edgewood’s AD until that position is filled.
Football, softball all-stars: Many area recent grads will represent their schools one last time in football and softball all-star games this week.
On Thursday at Kings, it’s the Southwest Ohio Football Coaches Association/Ron Woyan East-West All-Star Football Game. That official moniker has no chance of ever being in a headline, but the game is for a good cause: providing scholarships to local seniors. The association will award $12,000 in scholarships at halftime.
Head coach of the East is Don Sizer of Batavia. Larry Cox of Lakota West is the West head coach. Last year the East won 39-35 and leads the series 20-17.
Tickets are $5 and are available from participating players, coaches or at the gate.
On Wednesday and Thursday, the Southwest Ohio Softball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Games will be held at Mason High School. On Wednesday, the Division I game will be played at 5 p.m., followed by the D-III game at 7.
On Thursday at Mason, it’s the D-II game at 5 p.m. and the D-IV game at 7.
They’ll second that: Meadowdale’s second-place D-II team finish at last weekend’s state track and field meet was the best Dayton City League girls showing since Dunbar was second in the state in D-II in 2000. Meadowdale’s girls also were third in D-I in 1998. Roth was second in Class AA in 1981.
Stivers-Patterson is the only other top girls placer, winning the Class AAA title in 1976, the second year of girls track in Ohio.
Dunbar’s boys won the 2012 D-II state title and were second in 2011.
Coaching change: Fairmont has promoted Roger Downing from assistant to varsity boys soccer coach. He’ll be assisted by former Fairmont girls head coach Jeff Kuns.
The Firebirds’ boys head coaching job opened when Tom Robey resigned last month. Robey will continue to coach with the Northern Warren County Alliance that’s based in Springboro. Last season he led a U13 boys team to an Ohio South state championship.
