The Charlotte Eagles took the lead twice, but the Dayton Dutch Lions responded accordingly in a 2-2 USL Pro League draw Friday night at Beavercreek High School.
Shane Smith scored an impressive equalizer in the 85th minute on a beautiful left-footed shot across the face of the keeper into the bottom right corner to get Dayton even.
In the 23rd minute, a defensive lapse allowed Charlotte to take the lead on a one-touch shot by forward Christian Ramirez.
Joel DeLass scored for Dayton in the 45th minute on a penalty kick rebound.
DeLass’ first effort was stopped by the Charlotte keeper, but his second-chance shot off the rebound found the back of the net.
Charlotte controlled the ball well for much of the first half, but Dayton started to find its rhythm shortly before halftime.
Dayton continued to string good passes together to start the second half, creating several decent chances, but was unable to capitalize.
Whatever momentum the Dutch Lions had built to start the second half was erased in the 63rd minute when Charlotte took the lead again on a long shot from forward Jorge Herrera. The 25-yard shot seemed to fool Dayton keeper Matt Williams.
Dutch Lions forward Gibson Bardsley had a chance to win the game in the 90th minute but his strike was met by a determined Charlotte keeper.
The draw brings Dayton into a tie for fifth.
Dayton will pick up play on July 4 with a match against Rochester.
