The station reports the vandals also removed the head of the statue.
Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther issued a statement Tuesday saying:
"I support the removal of monuments celebrating the Confederacy, but I would urge people to remember that the disturbing and tragic events that unfolded in Charlottesville were not about statues, but about persistent racism in our country. "
WBNS-TV reports there are over 2,000 headstones at the Camp Chase Cemetery, some of which with the Southern Cross of Honor, a honor presented by the United Daughters of the Confederacy to Confederate veterans after the Civil War.
