Payroll Project: UC coaches make more than $2 million

Eight of the University of Cincinnati’s 20 highest-paid employees last year were sports administrators or coaches, led by the head football and basketball coaches, who pulled in more than $2 million each.

UC's overall financial health has stayed flat in recent years as most of Ohio's public four-year universities have declined, according to an I-Team analysis of state data.

An investigation by this newspaper last year found UC — and almost all other Ohio schools — lose money on sports, thought university officials say it serves as a recruiting tool.

UC paid 88 people more than $200,000 last year, a slight increase from 84 in 2014, according to the I-Team Payroll Project.

The highest-paid UC employees in 2015:

1. Tommy Tuberville, Head Football Coach: $2,341,022

2. Mick Cronin, Head Men’s Basketball Coach: $2,000,421

3. Santa Ono, President: $631,263

4. Shuk Ho, Medical Center Director: $504,516

5. David Szymanski, Dean of College of Business: $491,618

6. William Ball, Professor: $490,067

7. Ronald Sacher, Professor: $489,686

8. Beverly Davenport, Sr. VP Academic Affairs & Provost: $476,538

9. Michael Bohn, Dir. of Athletics: $470,268

10. Karl Scheer, Chief Investment Officer: $437,149
