Then & Now: Dayton's historical racing site for more than 140 years

The racetrack at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds has been the scene of numerous and diverse competitions through the decades.

A crowd gathered in 1913 to watch a race for a Fourth of July celebration. National Cash Register buildings fill the background.

That look at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds is the subject of this week's update to the popular Then & Now photo feature, which explores past and present views of notable Dayton locations.

In 1874, the world’s fastest racehorse, Goldsmith Maid, drew more than 75,000 fans to see the horse set a world record of 2 minutes, 18 seconds for one mile.

In 1914, famous automobile racer Barney Oldfield and aviator Lincoln Beachey raced each other – Beachey in his airplane above and Oldfield in his car on the track.

Today, redevelopment plans for the property are under review and a new site for the fairgrounds is sought.
