Then & Now : Miami Erie canal corridor

The Miami Erie Canal divided an early industrial section of Dayton.

On the left, N.B. Brown & Co., a manufacturer of carriage parts for streetcars and trains, the Dayton Dyeing Company and a laundry and clothing repair shop flanked the waterway.

This view of the canal corridor is the subject of this week's update to the popular Then & Now photo feature, which explores past and present views of notable Dayton locations.

A pair of row boats are docked alongside a picket fence surrounding the wood frame buildings.

Across the canal the Sachs-Pruden Brewing Company, which introduced its first product, Diamond Brand Pale Ale in 1889, spans the east bank.

Advertising for a cough cure is painted along a fence south of the brewery.

In more recent years the Hauer Music Co. was housed in the historic brewery. Today it is used by the Dayton Metro Library.
