Training session uses mock interviews, feedback to sharpen skills

The Hispanic Employment Program and the Black Employment Program hosted mock interviews Sept. 14 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the USO Community Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The program was designed to help Airmen become more competitive in their professional development efforts.

Under the auspices of the 88th Air Base Wing Affirmative Employment Program Office, the Hispanic Employment Program and the Black Employment Program invited representatives from five organizations to participate by forming an executive panel to give feedback during these mock interviews.

“We are here to assist and help better prepare Airmen to be more marketable for future leadership positions by improving their job interviewing skills,” said Kevin Simmons, Affirmative Employment program manager.

An observer worked with executive panel members, taking notes during the interview process to assist with both written and verbal evaluation feedback, which was provided to everyone who participated.

To provide better face-to-face interaction, a limited number of 30 participants were admitted to the session, including active-duty military, civilians and contractors.

“Leaders in my chain of command are always willing to help improve the skills of the Airmen here on WPAFB and always looking for ways to give back,” said Simmons.

Targeting GS-9s through GS-13s and their equivalents, this interview session was aimed at sharpening the skills of those who would like to interview for other positions in the government.

“Catching and investing in the younger Airman now will pay dividends for our workforce in the future,” said Simmons.

Due to interest in this session, both programs plan on offering this mock interview opportunity again.

“We hope to have this kind of session again, helping Airmen to shine and put their skills on display for our leadership,” said Simmons.

BEP, HEP and other special emphasis programs were established as integral parts of the overall Equal Employment Opportunity program to enhance the employment, training and advancement of a particular affinity group, women or people with disabilities.
