Want help starting a new business? Butler County course may be for you

Supports to Encourage Low-income Families (SELF) has won a $35,000 grant from the Ohio Community Development Corporation Association’s Ohio Microbusiness Development Program.

Through SELF’s efforts, 62 local businesses have been launched — with 47 still in business — and nearly $100,000 in microloans has been awarded since the Butler County program began in 2011, according to the organization.

“Helping aspiring entrepreneurs with their viable business ideas also helps community economic development,” said Jeffrey Diver, executive director of SELF. “SELF and its partners are making the difference to help small businesses grow and thrive.”

The Butler County Microenterprise and Microloan program is a partnership among SELF, the KDDK Legacy Group LLC and Neighborhood Housing Services of Hamilton, Inc. to help low- and moderate-income individuals learn how to start a new business and the opportunity to apply for small business loans.

The program provides 10 weeks of free small business training on a variety of topics including business plan development, marketing strategy, financial planning and hands-on management assistance. The program culminates with the development of a comprehensive business plan and the option to apply for a microloan of up to $5,000.

SELF and its partners will host three sessions of the Butler County Microenterprise and Microloan program in 2018, with the next class session starting on Jan. 10 in Hamilton. A spring class will also be offered in Middletown.
