Woman posing as Duke Energy employee scams Oxford resident

A suspicious Oxford resident called police after a woman claiming to be from Duke Energy came to her door asking for information.

The resident’s roommates provided a recent bill that they said the woman used to enter information into an iPad.

When the resident arrived, she spoke to the woman and verified information including her name, date of birth, telephone number and account number.

The resident then signed what the woman said was verification for her account, according to a police report.

SCAM ALERT: Do not answer calls or texts from these area codes

However, the resident became suspicious because the woman was not wearing clothing identifying her as a Duke Energy employee and did not have a company vehicle.

After the woman left, the resident called Duke Energy, which had no record of an employee visiting the residence nor any account verification requirement.

They said the woman was likely a scammer and to watch for any suspicious charges.

The alleged scammer was described as 5-foot-4 with dark curly hair and was driving a black Nissan Armada.
