Archie Miller excited to see Dayton Flyers land in Indianapolis

UD coach calls Wichita State a ‘Final Four-caliber’ team

Archie Miller said it maybe five times during the NCAA tournament selection show: “This is us.”

The Dayton Flyers coach tried to predict in the seconds before picks that his team might pop up next. Finally, in the second half of the show Sunday, it happened. Miller saw Kentucky earn a No. 2 seed in Indianapolis and yelled, “Big Blue.”

Seconds later, Miller’s Flyers made history, becoming the first team in school history to make the big dance four years in a row. A crowded group of players, coaches, friends and family members went crazy in Miller’s basement in Kettering as CBS announced Dayton as a No. 7 seed with a date in Indianapolis on Friday with No. 10 Wichita State.

Dayton couldn’t have been placed closer to home than Indianapolis. It has played within driving distance in the NCAA tournament each of the past four seasons.

“I’m very excited to No. 1 get in,” Miller said, “and we’re looking at Indianapolis as a place for our fans. I thought a seven seed was generous for us. I’m excited to be in the tournament. Wichita State is a final-four caliber program.

“It’s our fourth trip in a row, and Wichita State’s been on some tremendous runs. They’ve got a great team this year obviously. We are two teams that are probably similar in the kids we get. Being in Indy, though, that’s pretty cool right there.”
