Bowling’s ‘Ambassador’ award goes to deserving Segi

Jimmy Segi likes to share his love of bowling.

While the Union resident is neither a Greater Dayton United States Bowling Congress director nor board member, he is proactive when it comes to promoting the game — especially local tournaments. Segi recruited six teams, 22 doubles teams and 24 singles entries to compete in city tournaments during the 2016-17 season alone.

“Not only did Jimmy organize all of those entries, he is constantly promoting GDUSBC tournaments while bowling and through social media,” said Jenny Martin, former GDUSBC association manager. “He has also provided many constructive suggestions for future city tournaments as well as association events.”

That dedication earned Segi the distinction of receiving the GDUSBC Ambassador Award. The award acknowledges contributions of service to the association or its members. Segi will be recognized at the Aug. 5 awards brunch at the Presidential Banquet Center.

“It’s so rewarding, because I feel like I’m contributing to the forward movement of the game,” he said.

While the honor is welcome, it is not what motivated Segi.

“Several years ago, turnouts weren’t that great at the city tournament and I wanted to change that,” he said. “I wanted to do my part to recruit bowlers and increase the numbers and the prestige of the tournament. It’s such a cool feeling to look down the lanes and see them all full.”

City tournament entries have increased in recent years and, according to Segi, it’s the personal touch that has made the difference.

“A lot of guys want to bowl, they just haven’t been asked,” he said. “And for the average bowler it takes the intimidation factor away if they bowl with the guys from their league — and they tend to have a little more fun.”

While it’s Segi’s efforts behind the scenes that garnered him the ambassador award, the 34-year-old is also building a solid bowling resume. He has 22 300 games, 19 sanctioned, as well as 21 800 series, with an 836 high. He typically bowls in two leagues a week so he has time to spend with his family.
