Poelking followed suit as the longtime proprietor has served on local, state and national boards in an effort to promote the sport. From serving as a member of the Greater Dayton United States Bowling Congress youth board to being elected to the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America board, Poelking took on each role with enthusiasm.
“I have always tried to give as much as I can to the associations, I’m very passionate about it,” he said.
That passion has translated into statewide recognition as Poelking will be inducted into the Ohio Bowling Council Hall of Fame for meritorious service Nov. 4 in Columbus.
“Joe’s passion for the business and personal friendships are unmatched for bowling,” said Frank DeSocio, executive director of the BPAA in his Hall of Fame recommendation of Poelking. “He is never afraid to give his thoughts and opinions, but also willing to listen and, at times, change his mind if it is the right thing to do.”
Poelking’s steadfast support of the industry has included working on legislative initiatives like the defeat of a proposed sales tax on bowling. A firm believer in promoting the sport through advertising, Poelking has shared his knowledge in the area with other BCAO members in an effort to grow the sport.
“This sport has changed a lot over the years and continues to change,” he said. “I want to see it continue to advance and grow and I will do what I can to help make that happen.”
Community is important to Poelking, who has spearheaded a variety of charitable endeavors over the years. Bowl for Hospice has raised close to $1 million for Hospice of Dayton and Poelking centers also regularly host events for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Miami Valley.
In addition to his upcoming Hall of Fame induction, Poelking received the BCA of Ohio Certificate of Achievement (2008), the Mike Hennessy Meritorious Service Medal (2012) and was named the BPAA Ohio Proprietor of the Year (2013).
While Poelking spends most of his time and energy behind the scenes, his dedication finally paid off on the lanes during the 2013-14 season when he posted his first 300 game.
