Chris Smith stands out in first Bengals preseason game

The Bengals acquired defensive end Chris Smith from Jacksonville for a conditional 2018 draft pick. One preseason game in, it looks like a shrewd move.

Smith debuted with a bang Friday night, collecting two quarterback hits and a tackle for loss that forced a fumble.

Smith just missed sacking Buccaneers quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick for a safety.

Incumbent starting defensive end Michael Johnson didn’t look particularly sharp, opening the door for a player such as Smith to potentially earn more snaps.

"I just play with the cards I'm dealt," Smith said. "I control what I can control. The one thing I can control is me getting off the ball, pass rushing. Do what they brought me here to do, and that's get after the quarterback … I'm happy to be a Bengal."

And if Friday was a sign of what’s to come, the Bengals are happy to have him.
