Kyle Davis unlikely to play Sunday for Dayton Flyers

Senior guard missed first game since freshman year Thursday

Senior guard Kyle Davis got a lift from a member of the training staff, Ryne Davis, after the Dayton Flyers beat Richmond 75-59 Thursday at UD Arena. One Davis put the other Davis on his back and carried him up the ramp from Tom Blackburn court to the locker room in the Donoher Center.

Kyle Davis has put the Flyers on his back many times over the last four seasons, but in keeping with the theme of this injury-plagued season, he didn’t play Thursday because of a sprained ankle and bruised foot.

Also in keeping with the theme, the Flyers somehow found a way to win. They won without Kendall Pollard. They won without Charles Cooke. They continue to win without Josh Cunningham. They improved to 14-4 and moved into a first-place tie with Richmond at 5-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference without a player who Archie Miller has described as the heart and soul of the team.

Dayton will have to play without Davis again Sunday when it hosts Saint Louis at 2 p.m. Miller said Davis is making slow progress. He missed a game for the first time since February of his freshman year.

“I don’t see him playing on Sunday, barring a miracle,” Miller said. “Today he was trying to move around for three minutes, and it didn’t go well, so I don’t see him playing. Obviously, after this weekend, he’ll be re-evaluated and continue to progress. We need him. It’s very difficult to look out there and not have him on the floor in these types of games.”

Legends class: Dayton Flyers greats Bucky Bockhorn and Carol (Lammers) Lafountain will be honored at the A-10 tournament in March as members of the 2017 A-10 Legends class.

Bockhorn, who has called UD games on the radio since 1969 and has partnered with Larry Hansgen on WHIO for the last 34 seasons, ranks 53rd in UD history with 941 points. He played for the Flyers from 1955-58. Bockhorn played seven seasons (1958-65) in the NBA with the Cincinnati Royals, averaging 11.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists.

Lammers, of Miller City, Ohio, played for Dayton from 1977-81. She was inducted into the UD Hall of Fame in 1989. She ranks second in school history with 2,151 points. She averaged 19.5 points as a senior.

Next game: Saint Louis, the Flyers' opponent Sunday at UD Arena, lost 71-52 at St. Bonaventure on Tuesday.

Saint Louis (5-13, 1-5) ranks 246th in the RPI, standing ahead of only No. 255 Fordham among A-10 teams. At No. 311 in the Pomeroy ratings, Saint Louis is the lowest-ranked A-10 team.
