Miller: Dayton has to find an inside presence

Devon Scott lay face down on the floor, the pain etched on his face. If you had a front-row seat, you might have been able to see why he was hurting so much. A piece of one his teeth lay a foot away.

Scott had the most productive night of Dayton’s big men Wednesday in a 70-56 victory over St. Francis (Pa.) at UD Arena with four points in 19 minutes.

Matt Kavanaugh, Alex Gavrilovic, Jalen Robinson and Kendall Pollard combined to go scoreless in 27 minutes. Kavanaugh and Robinson combined to shoot 0-for-5 from the field. Pollard and Gavrilovic didn’t attempt a shot in limited action.

“We’ve got to get an inside presence,” coach Archie Miller said. “We don’t have the ability right now to throw the ball inside, get fouled or score. We’re having to generate that.

“Matt was very unsure of himself tonight for whatever reason, and Jalen’s not himself as well right now. We don’t have the ability to just pound that thing in there and get an easy one. We’ll see. That’s why you work so hard to practice every day and watch film and figure it out. This is where the teaching comes in.”

Same lineup: Dayton started the same five players as in its season-opening 81-80 victory Saturday over Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne: forwards Devin Oliver and Dyshawn Pierre, Kavanaugh at center and guards Vee Sanford and Khari Price.

Two sign: Darrell Davis, a 6-foot-4 point guard from Douglass Academy (Mich.), and 6-foot- 11, 285-pound center Steve McElvene, of New Haven (Ind.), signed national letters of intent with Dayton on Wednesday.

Miller called Davis one of the most intriguing guards they saw during the recruiting process.

“His size at almost 6-5 gives him such an advantage scoring the ball,” Miller said, “and his range and release will make him a real weapon early on in his career.”

Of McElvene, Miller said, “A true center at almost seven feet and 280 pounds, he’s a natural rebounder and rim protector. He is the kind of player that we haven’t really had here for a long, long time.”

Strong start: Through Tuesday, the 13 Atlantic 10 teams were 19-3 with six teams off to 2-0 starts. Virginia Commonwealth, ranked 14th in both polls, picked up an early marquee win by beating No. 25 Virginia 59-56 on Tuesday.

Next game: The Flyers host St. Francis College, of Brooklyn, N.Y., at noon Saturday. Fox Sports Ohio will broadcast the game.

The Terriers opened the season with two wins in Florida. They beat Miami, the defending ACC champions, 66-62 in overtime in their opener Friday and rallied from 11 points down in the second half to beat Florida Atlantic 59-57 on Monday.
