College Insider: Fairfield’s Gaffney tops Xavier women in scoring

Raeshaun Gaffney is having a standout season as a redshirt senior guard for the Xavier University women’s basketball team.

The Fairfield High School graduate leads the Musketeers in scoring (15.7) and is also averaging 4 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

Gaffney is shooting 40.2 percent from the floor, 42 percent from 3-point range and 73.9 percent from the foul line.

Xavier is 10-10 overall and 2-7 in the Big East Conference. The Muskies travel to Seton Hall on Friday at 7 p.m.

• Sophomore guard Jenna Brown (Edgewood) is contributing for a Shawnee State squad that’s 20-2 overall and 6-1 in the Mid-South Conference.

Brown has made one start and is averaging 2.8 points, 1.2 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.8 steals per game. She’s shooting 76.2 percent from the charity stripe.

The Bears will host Cumberlands on Thursday at 6 p.m.

• Sophomore forward Naomi Grandison (Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) of West Chester Twp. is averaging 5.1 points and 2.5 rebounds per game off the bench for Malone.

Grandison is shooting 38.8 percent from the field and 69.6 percent from the line. Freshman forward Katie Brehm (Ross) has grabbed two rebounds in three appearances.

The Pioneers are 12-5 overall and 5-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. They will visit Ursuline on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Men's swimming: Freshman Alex Nucerino (Lakota East) helped John Carroll post a 142-94 triumph at Baldwin Wallace last Saturday.

Nucerino won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:43.11. He was second in the 500 free (5:10.34) and the 200 free relay (1:33.01).

The Blue Streaks will host Wilmington on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Women's indoor track & field: Morehead State sophomore Gloria Corona-Luna (Lakota West) won the 3,000-meter race (11:27.60) in last Friday's Tom Wright Open, a tri-meet that included host Bowling Green and Toledo.

It was the beginning of MSU’s first indoor season in 10 years. The Eagles will travel to Huntington, W.Va., to compete in Marshall’s Thundering Herd Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
