Florida coach Dan Mullen signed one of the best transition classes in school history.

The Gators closed strong on National Signing Day and finished with a top-15 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

The average star rating (3.78) and number of 4-star signees (12) in Mullen’s class trump the transition years under former Florida coaches Urban Meyer, Jim McElwain, Will Muschamp and Ron Zook.

Here is a breakdown of the five recruiting classes:

Ron Zook’s first recruiting class (2002)

Recruiting rankings: No. 20 nationally, No. 7 in SEC (Rivals.com)

Number of signees: 23 players

Top-100 recruits (4): 5-star RB Ciatrick Fason, 4-star quarterback Gavin Dickey, 4-star running back DeShawn Wynn and 4-star tackle Randy Hand.

Stars matter: one 5-star, eight 4-stars, nine 3-stars and five 2-stars.

Average-star rating: 3.22 (No. 20 nationally, No. 7 in SEC)

Urban Meyer’s first recruiting class (2005)

Recruiting rankings: No. 15 nationally, No. 4 in SEC (Rivals.com)

Number of signees: 18 players

Top-100 recruits (1): 4-star cornerback Avery Atkins

Stars matter: zero 5-stars, eight 4-stars, nine 3-stars and one 2-stars.

Average-star rating: 3.39 (No. 11 nationally, No. 4 in SEC)

Will Muschamp’s first recruiting class (2011)

Recruiting rankings: No. 12 nationally, No. 5 in SEC (Rivals.com)

Number of signees: 19 players

Top-100 recruits (5): 4-star quarterback Jeff Driskel, 4-star quarterback Jacob Brissett, 4-star running back Mike Blakely, 4-star tight end A.C. Leonard, 4-star cornerback Marcus Roberson

Stars matter: zero 5-stars, 11 4-stars and eight 3-stars.

Average-star rating: 3.58 (No. 7 nationally, No. 5 in SEC)

Jim McElwain’s first recruiting class (2015)

Top-100 recruits (2): 5-star offensive tackle Martez Ivey and 5-star defensive end CeCe Jefferson

Stars matter: two 5-stars, three 4-stars and 16 3-stars.

Average-star rating: 3.29 (No. 18 nationally, No. 7 in SEC)
