Michigan State-North Florida basketball preview

The regular season has finally arrived, and it’s time for Bridges and Michigan State to prove themselves worthy of the preseason hype. And just as the three exhibition games were tune-ups for this, this game will be a tune-up for the Champions Classic matchup with No. 1 Duke in Chicago on Tuesday.

Michigan State has faced North Florida once before, a 78-48 win in 2013. Both coaches from that year, Izzo and the Ospreys’ Matthew Driscoll, remain at the helm. North Florida has won two of the last three Atlantic Sun regular season titles and will offer a solid test to open the year.

Michigan State will likely start the four members of its highly-touted 2016 scholarship class: Bridges, Cassius Winston, Josh Langford and Nick Ward. Bridges was named to the preseason  Associated Press All-America team as the highest vote-getter.

The fifth spot could go to blue-chip recruit Jaren Jackson Jr., a 6-foot-11 McDonald’s All-American who impressed with his shot-blocking, outside shooting and much more in the Spartans’ exhibition games.

Michigan State added just two freshman in Jackson and fellow big man Xavier Tillman, but the Spartans also saw senior bigs Ben Carter and Gavin Schilling return from season-ending knee injuries. Izzo’s team went from a dearth of post players to an abundance in one offseason.

Izzo will look to lead the Spartans to their 21st consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, but that won’t be nearly enough. This team feels it has the talent to win a national championship. On Friday, the first step of that journey begins.
