On the banks of the Red Cedar, recruiting never stops. We’re here every step of the way to keep you informed with our daily notebook. Recruiting questions? Comment below or direct them to, and we’ll do our best to get them answered.

Spartans offer in-state star

Michigan State has been battling Central Florida for supremacy in the rankings.

The Spartans have the edge in the College Football Playoff rankings and the Associated Press Top 25, while UCF ranks higher in the Amway Coaches Poll. The Knights have gotten off to an 8-0 start, with their most impressive win coming against Memphis.

Now the Spartans and Knights will go at it over a top recruit. La’Darius Jefferson, a 3-star senior in the 247Sports composite, has been committed to Central Florida as a quarterback since May. Since then, he hadn’t received any new offers.

But on Friday, the Muskegon (Mich.) star announced a long-awaited offer from Michigan State. The Spartans had been showing interest in Jefferson for some time and brought him in for multiple visits.

“God has worked wonders and has blessed me in many ways and I’m beyond thankful,” Jefferson wrote on Twitter while announcing the offer.

Jefferson told Land of 10 that the Spartans offered him as an athlete. A prolific offensive player, he could potentially fit in at running back or wide receiver.

But for Muskegon, he has stood out behind center. Per 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong, Jefferson has passed for 1,103 yards and 19 touchdowns and rushed 156 time for 1,555 yards and 23 touchdowns.

The 6-foot-2 Jefferson fits Michigan State’s profile of a big running back. He ranks 31st among Michigan seniors and 37th nationally among dual-threat quarterbacks.

If Jefferson were to get a shot at quarterback, there would be a crowded field. The Spartans are already bringing in 4-star Dearborn (Mich.) Divine Child QB Theo Day in the 2018 class.
